The Meteorological Department (IMD) has expressed a strong possibility of torrential rain, severe thunderstorm and lightning in various parts of the country during the next 24 hours. According to meteorologists, a cyclonic circulation remains active around West Bengal and Jharkhand. At the same time, a cyclonic circulation of upper air is also ready over eastern Uttar Pradesh. The combined effect of these weather systems is likely to cause gale force winds of 50 to 60 kilometers per hour along with heavy rainfall in many states.

Heavy rain alert in 12 districts of Jharkhand

The weather is predicted to be very active in Jharkhand on August 19 and 20. Apart from the capital Ranchi, a warning has been issued regarding heavy rain and strong storm in Bokaro, Deoghar, Dumka, Dhanbad, Jamshedpur, Simdega, Hazaribagh, Ramgarh, Khunti, Chatra and Palamu districts.

During this period, the risk of lightning will also remain very high. The Meteorological Department has specifically advised people to avoid going out in the open during bad weather and not to take shelter under trees or electric poles.

Big rain alert in 22 states of the country

According to the data of the Indian Meteorological Department, the effect of heavy rains and storms can be seen in 22 major states of the country. These states include:

  • Eastern and Central India: Bihar, West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh
  • North India: Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir
  • Northeast and South India: Assam, Sikkim, Meghalaya, Tripura, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Telangana

According to the Meteorological Department, due to continuous torrential rains, road, rail and local traffic may be disrupted in many cities and plains. At the same time, due to continuous rains in the hilly states, the risk of landslides has increased significantly.

Warning in many districts of West Bengal

Strong monsoon trend is also being seen in West Bengal. An alert of heavy rain and thunderstorm has been issued in major cities and districts of the state such as Kolkata, Howrah, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Malda, Alipurduar, Durgapur, Darjeeling, Bardhaman, West Medinipur, Bankura and Cooch Behar. The Meteorological Department has appealed to the common people to keep an eye on every weather update and stay in safe places during lightning and heavy rains.
