New Delhi: Heavy rains in the national capital Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Friday brought relief from the heat, but disrupted life in many areas. A parking lot wall suddenly collapsed in the Deoli area of South Delhi. Debris fell on approximately eight parked cars, severely damaging them. Fortunately, no one was inside the cars at the time of the accident, and no injuries have been reported so far.
According to locals, the area had been facing a long-standing waterlogging problem. They claim that ongoing construction work on the road and nearby roads disrupted water drainage, which increased pressure on the wall and led to its collapse.
Road and excavation work underway in the area
A local resident reported that approximately eight to ten vehicles were affected in the accident. According to them, road excavation and sewer work were underway in the area. Water accumulated after the rain, which is likely the reason for the collapse of the parking lot wall. Residents also raised questions about the Municipal Corporation’s functioning. They say they have been parking their vehicles at this spot for several years, but such an incident had never occurred before. According to locals, the digging of streets and sewer blockages have affected drainage during the monsoon.
Waterlogging and Traffic Jams in Many Areas
The effects of the rain were felt in many parts of Delhi. Waterlogging halted vehicular movement at many places, leaving people stranded in traffic jams for hours. Incidents of falling trees were also reported in several areas. According to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, complaints of waterlogging and falling trees were received from various areas, including Keshavpuram, South, Central, West, and Civil Lines.
Traffic was affected on several major routes, including Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, ITO, Wazirabad Road, Patel Road, Rohtak Road, Shankar Road, Kirti Nagar, Delhi-Jaipur Highway, Peeragarhi, and Shaheen Bagh. Traffic movement was also slow on GT Road, GTB Enclave, and Dilshad Garden in East Delhi. The rains have once again brought to the fore the challenges related to drainage and infrastructure in the capital.
