The poor condition of government schools in Rajasthan has once again come to light. A case of attack on a Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) team, which was going to inspect a government school in Bagru near Jaipur, came to light on Friday. The team was led by party co-convenor Ashutosh Ranka.

The team was going to inspect this school because it was alleged that the school here was being run in a cow shed. Last year, the school building was declared unsafe and closed and entry into it was banned. After this the students were shifted to a temporary place nearby. It is alleged that buffaloes are also kept in this temporary complex.

How many schools are running without buildings in Rajasthan?

However, this is not the only school in Rajasthan which has infrastructure problems. According to the Indian Express report, state government figures show that in the capital Jaipur alone, 38 government schools are running without any buildings. The number of such schools in entire Rajasthan is 611.

How many schools do not have toilets?

Apart from this, out of 64,484 government schools having their own buildings in the state, there are 2,047 schools which do not have toilet facilities. Drinking water facility is not available in 1,049 government schools.

The Rajasthan government gave this information in response to the question of Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Tika Ram Julie on Friday. The government said that according to the Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE) data of 2025-26 under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, there are 611 schools in the state which do not have their own buildings. Of these, 10 schools are for girls.

In which places how many schools are running without buildings?

Aklera block of Jhalawar is at the forefront in terms of number of schools without buildings. Here 23 schools are running without buildings. After this, there are 16 such schools in Khanpur and 11 in Jhalrapatan of Jhalawar. The top five include Baap block of Phalodi with 11 schools and Chhotisarwan block of Banswara with 10 schools.

If we talk about schools without buildings for girls, there are two schools each in Jaipur and Alwar. Apart from this, one girls school each in Barmer, Churu, Dungarpur, Karauli, Kota and Rajsamand is running without a building.

In which places there are no toilets?

According to government data, out of 64,484 government schools in the state with their own buildings, 2,047 do not have toilet facilities. The worst situation in terms of toilet facilities is in those districts where the tribal population is high. Banswara tops with 188 schools. After this, there are 124 schools in Dungarpur and 98 schools in Udaipur, where there is no toilet facility. After these, there are 84 government schools in Bikaner, 81 in Jhalawar and 79 in Jaisalmer which do not have toilet facilities.

No drinking water in 1,049 schools.

The figures regarding drinking water facilities in government schools are also a matter of concern. There is no drinking water facility in 1,049 schools in the state. Dausa has the highest number of such schools at 96. After this, there are 70 schools in Udaipur, 65 in Alwar, 60 in Karauli and 58 in Banswara where drinking water facility is not available.

Ranka, have you inspected the school before?

CJP co-convenor Ashutosh Ranka had visited a school in Alwar on 14 August. The students of this school started the protest because a part of the ceiling of an empty room of the school had collapsed. Bagru's school was also being visited similarly to investigate the allegations related to the ground condition and basic facilities of the schools.

Government kept Rs 550 crore for repairs

Rajasthan government has also given information about the steps being taken to improve the condition of schools. According to the government, under the budget announcement, Rs 550 crore will be spent on the repair and renovation of schools. Apart from this, a provision of Rs 450 crore has been made for such schools which do not have their own buildings or which are running in dilapidated buildings. New buildings will be constructed with this amount. The government said that under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, providing buildings, toilets and other necessary facilities in government schools of the state is one of its top priorities.

Plan to spend Rs 12,500 crore in five years

According to the government, Rs 2,500 crore will be available every year for new construction, repair and maintenance of such school buildings from primary to senior secondary level. In this way, a total amount of Rs 12,500 crore will be made available in five years. This amount will be spent on those school buildings which are in dilapidated condition and need repair or new construction.

The state government said that many sources are being used to get the amount of Rs 2,500 crore every year. These include District Mineral Foundation Trust (DMFT), Samagra Shiksha, State Fund, VB G-RAM-G, MP and MLA Local Area Development Fund, SDRF and CSR etc.

What questions did the Leader of Opposition raise on the government's plan?

Leader of Opposition Tika Ram Julie has raised questions on the steps being taken by the government. Citing an audit conducted last year, he said that the government has no plan to improve the condition of schools.

According to Julie, 3,768 government schools in the state have become completely dilapidated and have been declared unsafe for use. The government closed these schools or shifted the students studying there to other places. They claim that this has also reduced the enrollment of students in schools. He also said that 83,783 rooms in government schools in the state are completely dilapidated and unsafe for use.
