Rajya Sabha MP Karthikeya Sharma has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to consider awarding Flydubai’s Indian pilot Captain Smit Machar with the country’s highest peacetime gallantry award ‘Ashoka Chakra’ for his extraordinary courage, presence of mind and devotion to duty.
Captain Smit Machar, a resident of Mumbai, was seriously injured during flydubai flight FZ1073. During the incident, his co-pilot allegedly attacked him and attempted to hijack the plane. Despite serious injuries and extremely stressful circumstances, Captain Machar did not lose courage and discharged his duty while giving top priority to the safety of the 174 passengers on board the aircraft. Kartikeya Sharma said that the courage and patience shown by Captain Machar in that hour of crisis is an inspiring example of Indians’ indomitable courage and dedication to duty.
