Mumbai: On the auspicious occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi, the makers of Ramayana have unveiled the first song from the much-awaited Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi-starrer. Titled Jai Jai Ram, the devotional track has been composed by Oscar-winning musician A R Rahman, penned by Dr Kumar Vishwas and sung by Arijit Singh and Shreya Ghoshal.
The song blends the spiritual quality of an aarti with the emotional depth and scale of a cinematic composition. It brings several important moments from Lord Ram’s life to the screen, including his wedding with Sita and his emotional reunion with Bharat.
The release marks the beginning of the musical journey of one of the most ambitious Indian films currently in production.
AR Rahman combines prayer and cinematic scale
The composition of Jai Jai Ram revolves around the repeated invocation of Shri Ram’s name. While rooted firmly in devotional music, the track gradually expands into a cinematic presentation befitting the scale of Ramayana.
Rahman said the intention was to preserve the purity and intimacy of a prayer while allowing the composition to develop into a cinematic song.
He also praised Arijit Singh and Shreya Ghoshal for bringing their distinct emotional expressions to Dr Kumar Vishwas’s lyrics while maintaining the devotional character of the composition.
“I hope audiences find both a sense of peace and a personal connection in it,” Rahman said.
The combination of Rahman’s music, Vishwas’s lyrics and the voices of Arijit and Shreya gives the song a distinctly devotional character while connecting it to the larger emotional world of the film.
Namit Malhotra explains significance of first song
Filmmaker and producer Namit Malhotra said Shri Ram remains at the heart of Ramayana and described the song as an expression of the personal and timeless relationship devotees share with him.
According to Malhotra, the film is being created on a grand scale, but its foundation remains rooted in emotion, values and devotion.
He said Jai Jai Ram was chosen as the first song because it celebrates Shri Ram not only as a figure of worship but also as a protector, guide and source of strength.
Malhotra also highlighted the significance of releasing the song on Ganesh Chaturthi. He said beginning the film’s musical journey on the festival was especially meaningful because seeking the blessings of Lord Ganesha traditionally marks an auspicious beginning.
Kumar Vishwas calls song a complete prayer
Lyricist Dr Kumar Vishwas described Jai Jai Ram as a simple yet deeply meaningful prayer.
He said his intention while writing the song was not to describe Shri Ram, as his significance could not be contained within words, but to express the relationship devotees share with him as a guide, source of strength and refuge.
The language, he said, has been kept simple and direct because devotion does not require elaborate ornamentation.
Vishwas expressed hope that listeners would not merely hear the song but find their own personal prayer within it.
The lyrical approach complements Rahman’s musical intention, keeping the central invocation simple while allowing the emotion to build through the cinematic presentation.
Ranbir and Sai Pallavi lead Ramayana
Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ramayana features Ranbir Kapoor as Shri Ram and Sai Pallavi as Sita. Yash plays Ravana, while Sunny Deol portrays Hanuman and Ravi Dubey plays Lakshman.
The film is being produced by Namit Malhotra’s Prime Focus Studios in association with DNEG and Yash’s Monster Mind Creations. Sony Pictures is handling global distribution of the film, excluding India.
The first song also offers audiences a glimpse into the visual treatment of the epic, with moments from Shri Ram’s life woven into the devotional track.
Trailer response raises expectations
The release of Jai Jai Ram comes after a strong digital response to the Ramayana trailer.
The trailer reportedly crossed one billion digital views across platforms within six days, generating significant interest in the film among audiences in India and overseas.
With its large-scale production, prominent cast and international distribution, Ramayana has emerged as one of the most anticipated Indian cinematic projects.
The release of the first song now gives audiences their first major introduction to the film’s musical and devotional identity.

Ramayana Part One is scheduled to arrive in cinemas during Diwali 2026.
The makers have positioned Jai Jai Ram as the musical starting point for the epic, bringing together devotional lyrics, Rahman’s composition and the voices of two of India’s leading playback singers.
As the film moves closer to its theatrical release, the song is expected to further build anticipation around Nitesh Tiwari’s interpretation of the Ramayana and its portrayal of some of the most significant characters and moments from the epic.
