Change in the rules of ration distribution

Grain Allocation Per Member: An important news is coming out for crores of ration card holders of the country. The central government is planning to make changes in the ration system across the country. Let us tell you that the government has prepared and released the draft of the National Food Security Bill 2026. In this draft, it has been proposed to change the rules of ration distribution under Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY). The government is taking this step to strengthen food and nutrition security and simplify the ration distribution system.

Ration will be given according to the members of the family

According to the new proposal, the method of distributing ration under Antyodaya Anna Yojana will change. Earlier, every poor family used to get a fixed amount of 35 kg of food grains, irrespective of the number of people in the family. But now under the new rule, 7 kg of grains will be given to each member of the family. However, the government has also made it clear that no family will get more than 35 kg of food grains in total. That means, the ration will now be decided on the basis of the number of family members, but its maximum limit will remain 35 kg only.

Why was the rule changed?

  • The government says that the current rule leads to discrimination in distributing ration.
  • Currently, small families get more grains per person, while people from larger families get less grains in their share.
  • To eliminate this gap, the government is bringing a new rule.
  • The objective of the new proposal is to give equal rights to all the beneficiaries, so that every member of the family can get equal quantity of grains.
