Get ready, these most used notes in India will be changed; RBI made a big announcement

RBI Plastic Note: This is the era of UPI. People keep less cash. The reason is true, because paper notes get spoiled quickly and get torn easily. However, this problem is going to be solved now, because in future the notes in your pocket may be made of plastic.

RBNNMPL, the note printing wing of the Reserve Bank of India, has issued a global tender for manufacturing plastic notes. The company has invited Expression of Interest (EOI) from companies across the world to manufacture and supply polymer sheets, which means that for the first time the process of purchasing the plastic material required for printing notes seems to have officially started. Initially, Rs 10 and Rs 20 notes can be launched as a pilot project.

What exactly are plastic notes?

Plastic notes are called polymer notes. These are printed not on common plastic, but on a special, strong plastic film. White coating is done on this film for printing. The note also has a transparent window, which is considered its most important security feature. This is the reason why it is very difficult to counterfeit such notes.

Which notes can be exchanged first?

Experts believe that if the pilot project starts, then Rs 10 and Rs 20 notes could be the first notes made from polymer. The reason is clear: these are the most used and get spoiled the fastest.

How important is this step of RBI?

BRBNMPL is the same company which prints Indian currency in its presses in Mysore and Salboni. This company is seeking proposals from global companies to purchase polymer sheets, this is not just an idea, but a sure sign of preparation. However, this does not mean that plastic notes will be available in the market next month. This process is still in the initial stage.

In the post-monetary policy press conference on June 5, 2026, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra said that the proposal of polymer notes is being considered. He clarified that no final decision has been taken and the Central Bank is weighing its advantages and disadvantages.

Idea of polymer note in India

The idea of polymer notes in India is about 14 years old. This was first discussed around 2009. In 2012, the government approved field trials of 1 billion polymer notes of Rs 10.
In 2014, it was decided to test them in different weather conditions in Kochi, Mysore, Jaipur, Shimla and Bhubaneswar. In 2016, the government announced that the process of purchasing the goods had begun, but the plan could not move forward due to technical and operational reasons and the project was put on hold.
