RBI’s WhatsApp alert, frauds happening in the name of digital rupee, know how to avoid it

New Delhi: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has started a new campaign to make people aware about Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) i.e. Digital Rupee in the country. Under this initiative, RBI is sending official messages to the citizens through WhatsApp, so that correct information about the use of digital rupee, its security and facts related to it can be conveyed to the people.

The aim of RBI is to promote digital payments as well as to make people understand that the digital rupee is the official digital currency of the country, which is issued by the central bank. It is a digital alternative to paper notes and coins and includes the sovereign guarantee of the central bank.

RBI alerted people

In view of increasing cyber fraud, the Reserve Bank has also advised people to be cautious. The bank has clarified that it is very important to check the authenticity of any message related to digital rupee. If any WhatsApp message claims to get free digital money, KYC update or click on an unknown link, it should be immediately ignored, as such messages may be part of a fraud.

RBI has asked people to trust only messages coming from its verified business accounts. Verification badge, Reserve Bank profile and authorized business information are available on the official account. Apart from this, the Bank has also clarified that it itself "RBI Digital Rupee App" Does not provide.

Use digital payment app

Digital Rupee can be used only through authorized commercial banks. Customers who have accounts in the banks included in this pilot project like SBI, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Bank of Baroda and other authorized banks can use it by downloading the official Digital Rupee app of their bank from Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

What is the objective of the campaign?

RBI says that the objective of the public awareness campaign is to provide correct and authentic banking information to the people, to remove misconceptions regarding digital currency and to make them aware about cyber security. The bank has appealed to citizens to trust only information from official sources and avoid any suspicious links or fake apps.
