Today is the festival of Devshayani Ekadashi. This festival is considered to have special importance in Sanatan Dharma. According to religious belief, a devotee who observes a fast on this day, worships Lord Vishnu with a true heart and reads or listens to the Vrat Katha, not only gets the blessings of Lord Vishnu but also gets freedom from the sins committed unknowingly. Also the devotee attains salvation and all his wishes are fulfilled.

Regarding this fast, Yudhishthir had once asked Lord Krishna what is the significance of Devshayani Ekadashi. Then Lord Shri Krishna replied that this is the best among all Ekadashi fasts. With the effect of this fast, a person’s sins are destroyed and he attains salvation. This is the reason why a large number of devotees observe fast on Devshayani Ekadashi.

 

According to religious experts, those who observed the fast of Devshayani Ekadashi but did not read or listen to the fast story, their fast is considered incomplete. In such a situation, the wishes of the devotees are not fulfilled. Therefore, along with fasting on this day, it is considered very important to read or listen to the Vrat Katha. Devashyani Ekadashi Vrat Katha

 

According to the story, in ancient times there was a king named Mandhata. He protected the interests of his subjects and worked for the welfare of the people of the state. There was never famine in his kingdom. However, once there was no rain in his kingdom for three consecutive years. Due to lack of rain there was a severe famine in the entire state. People started yearning for food and water. Due to shortage of food and water, people also stopped performing religious rituals like Havan, Yagya and Puja.

 

Seeing such condition of the kingdom, King Mandhata became very sad and worried. They started thinking continuously how to solve this problem. After much deliberation, they set out towards the forest in search of a solution.

When King Mandhata was roaming in the forest riding a horse, he saw the ashram of Maharishi Angira, son of Brahmaji. He immediately reached the ashram and folded his hands and said, ‘O Rishivar, I always follow dharma, yet there has been no rain in my kingdom for the last three years. Please suggest some solution by which it rains again in my state and the famine ends.

 

Then Maharishi Angira said, ‘O king, observe the fast of Devshayani Ekadashi falling in the Shukla Paksha of Ashadh month. Due to the effect of this fast, devotees get freedom from sins. Along with all the people of your state, observe the fast of Devshayani Ekadashi and worship Lord Vishnu as per the rituals. This will solve all the problems of your state. After knowing the solution from Maharishi Angira, King Mandhata returned to his kingdom. When the day of Devshayani Ekadashi came, the king along with the entire people observed a fast and worshiped Lord Vishnu as per the rituals. Due to the effect of the fast, there was good rain in the state, there was greenery all around and famine ended from the state.
