The Web Shooter seen in the Spider-Man films has long been a source of interest among fans. Now, a YouTuber named Plentiful Props 3D has taken inspiration from it and created a real-life Web Shooter. This device is worn on the wrist and, when the trigger is pulled, shoots out a web-like substance.

This project is primarily a combination of 3D printing, electronics, and mechanical engineering. It was developed for entertainment and technological experimentation purposes.

How does this gadget work?

This Web Shooter uses an ESP32-S3 Mini development board, mounted on a custom PCB. It also includes an 18650 lithium-ion battery, a charging module, a kill switch, and a trigger button.

When the user presses the trigger, a signal is transmitted to the microcontroller. The motor then activates, depressing the spray mechanism, and the special mixture contained in the cartridge is ejected. Upon contact with air, this mixture forms a thread-like structure, resembling Spider-Man’s web.

The entire body was made using 3D printing.

The device’s outer body and liquid cartridge were created using a 3D printer. Because the solution used contains acetone, the container was made from a special material that can withstand the effects of the chemical.

3D printing allowed the device to be designed to resemble the web shooter seen in movies. Furthermore, its various components can be easily replaced or upgraded as needed.

The biggest challenge was the spray system.

According to the YouTuber, the most difficult part of this project was creating a spray mechanism that could eject the mixture with the right amount of pressure. Initially, several motors were tested, but they weren’t producing enough power.

Eventually, a high-torque metal gear motor was used, which provided sufficient pressure to the spray pump and ensured consistent and controlled discharge of the web. This change significantly improved the device’s performance.

How is ‘Jaala’ prepared?

The web produced by this Web Shooter isn’t actually a spider’s web, but a special chemical mixture made by mixing fabric adhesive and acetone.

When this mixture is sprayed out, it slowly solidifies upon contact with air. This is why it appears similar to Spider-Man’s web. However, this is only a technical demonstration (prototype) and is not designed for real-life use on people or for any kind of stunt.

This project shows that modern technologies like 3D printing, microcontrollers and mechanical design can be used to create working prototypes inspired by the imagery of films.
