A retired school teacher, his wife, their 23-year-old daughter and 12-year-old son were found dead inside their locked home in Rangpur city, Bangladesh, late Saturday night. Police recovered the bodies at around 11.30 pm. The family members are suspected to have been strangled, according to investigators.
The deceased were identified as retired Rangpur Zilla School teacher Ganapati Chakraborty, 65, his wife Pritilata Chakraborty, 50, daughter Agami Chakraborty Prarthi, 23, and son Priyam Chakraborty, 12. Nazmul Kader, officer-in-charge of Rangpur Metropolitan Kotwali Police Station, confirmed the recovery of the bodies.
Bodies Found in Different Parts of the House
The bodies were found in different parts of the three-storey house. Subir Chowdhury, in-charge of Rangpur Metropolitan CID, said Pritilata and Agami were found on the staircase. Ganapati’s body was found on the roof. Priyam was found underneath a bed.
“Initially, we suspect that they were strangled,” Chowdhury said.
Police believe the killings may have taken place between midnight on Thursday and the early hours of Friday. Investigators are now trying to establish what happened inside the house and why the family was targeted.
Two Young Men Detained Over Family Killings
In the initial investigation, police have arrested two young men who are identified as Mughdho and Siddhartha. Investigators suspect that the family may have confronted the two men over alleged Yaba use on their home’s rooftop. Yaba is an illegal and highly addictive syntetic drug.
Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mabud said the suspects allegedly entered the rooftop through a neighbouring building.
According to police, Ganapati may have been killed after he allegedly objected to their presence and could have revealed their identities. Investigators believe he was strangled with a cotton towel he was carrying on his shoulder.
Police also suspect that Priyam may have been killed because he could identify the suspects. Mabud said the child knew the suspects and was friends with Siddhartha’s younger brother, Apurba.
Family Became Suspicious After Phones Were Switched Off
Relatives became concerned after all four family members’ mobile phones remained switched off from Thursday night. Puja Chakraborty, Pritilata’s younger sister, said she last spoke to her sister on Thursday afternoon.
When the family could not reach them, relatives went to their home on Saturday night. They found the main gate locked and the lights switched off. Police were called to the spot. Officers broke open the lock and entered the house, where they found the four bodies.
Puja said she was not aware of any dispute involving Ganapati. She also said the family had recently built a new house in the area.
Retired Teacher Had No Known Enemies
Ganapati retired from Rangpur Zilla School last year, and his daughter has completed her master’s degree in English from Rangpur Carmichael College this year, while his 12-year-old son was studying in Class 5 at Rangpur Zilla School.
According to Ganapati’s niece, Soma Chakraborty, he had no known enemies and, after retirement, he was working as a homoeopathic practitioner.
Local resident Sudhangshu Chandra Das stated that the family had lived in the area for around four years. Ganapati had built the three-storey house, even though the construction was still incomplete.
Police Await Autopsy Reports
Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mabud has assured that the case will be investigated with utmost priority. The Police also clarified that the exact cause of the death will be revealed once the autopsy reports are received. Detective Branch personnel are also investigating the case and will examine the circumstances which could have led to the family’s deaths. The investigation is expected to establish the sequence of events to understand the motive behind the alleged killings.
