An incident related to expensive jewelery has come to light during filmmaker Rhea Kapoor’s visit to New York. It is being told that Rhea Kapoor, who went to New York to attend a fashion event, had rented diamond earrings worth about Rs 1.35 crore, which later allegedly went missing.
Entertainment News: Filmmaker and fashion stylist Rhea Kapoor is in the news for a high-profile jewelery theft case. According to reports, diamond and emerald studded earrings worth around Rs 1.35 crore, taken on rent during her trip to New York, went missing. In this case, a complaint of theft has been lodged at Sahar Police Station in Mumbai and investigation is going on.
The incident came to light when Rhea Kapoor was in New York for an international fashion event, where she had reportedly gone to attend a prestigious event like the Met Gala.
Expensive designer jewelery was taken on rent
According to police sources, the jewelery was taken on rent from two leading jewelers of Mumbai—Mehta Jewelers and Goenka Jewellers. The total price of these earrings is said to be around Rs 1.35 crore. These included two sets, one set worth Rs 66 lakh, which was studded with 18 carat gold along with diamonds and emeralds. The second set, worth around Rs 69 lakh, included Zambian emerald and gold border design. Both these sets were packed in two separate boxes under special protection.
Rhea Kapoor had reached New York with the team
According to the complaint, the jewelery was being transported from Mumbai to New York and was kept with celebrity makeup artist Savleen Singh (41). Savleen has been working with Rhea Kapoor for the last seven years. The team reached New York’s John F Kennedy International Airport on April 27 via Emirates flight from Mumbai via Dubai. After this all the members stayed in The Pierre Hotel.
According to the police, when the team opened the jewelery boxes after check-in at the hotel, both the boxes were found empty. There was panic in the team after this unexpected incident. In the initial investigation it is not clear when and how the jewelery went missing. At present, it is also a matter of investigation whether this theft happened during the journey or at some other place.
Complaint lodged after returning to Mumbai
The team returned to India after the incident and a formal complaint was lodged at Sahar police station in Mumbai. The police have registered a case of theft against an unknown person under section 303(2) of the Indian Justice Code. Police officials say the case is being investigated from all possible angles, including travel logistics, baggage handling and the role of hotel staff.
This case also raises questions on the security arrangements for expensive jewelery in high-profile international trips. The fashion and film industries often rent designer jewelery to wear at events and red carpets.
