New Delhi : The kitchen budget of ordinary families suffering from inflation has now also come under pressure due to the rising price of rice. Rising prices of rice against the backdrop of increased prices of onion and edible oil have strained the monthly household budget. In the last two months or so, prices of several major varieties of rice have risen significantly in the market.
The price of Kolam rice, which is the most widely used, has now reached around Rs 75 per kg. About two months ago, the same rice was available at Rs 55-60 per kg. Similarly, Jayashree Ram rice is now being sold at around Rs 80 per kg, compared to around Rs 65 per kg two months ago.

Low rainfall contributes to price hike Grain trader Kamalakar Ghatole said that availability and price of rice has been affected due to weak monsoon and low rainfall in many areas including Vidarbha. Although prices have decreased slightly in the wholesale market, there has been an increase in the retail market. The share of rice in retail inflation has reached about 5.88 percent. Kolam, which was Rs 55 to Rs 60 a kg two months ago, is now Rs 75, while Jayshreeram, which was Rs 65 to Rs 70 a kg, has become around Rs 80 a kg.
Chinnore crosses Rs 100 mark
A grocer said that even premium varieties have not been left behind in the rise in rice prices. The price of Chinnore rice has increased from Rs 100 to Rs 110 per kg. Hence, families who prefer good quality or specific type of rice are also affected. It is said that the price of basmati rice has increased by about 15 to 20 percent in the market. Whereas non-basmati rice has become expensive by 20 to 25 percent.
Inflation is increasing
