Rishi Kapoor’s ‘Karz’ flopped, but the songs created a stir, the actor was emotionally disturbed!

New Delhi. Bollywood veteran actor Rishi Kapoor’s film Karz, released in 1980, may be considered a cult classic today, but its box office performance was very weak at the time of release. Interestingly, it was not the failure of the film, but its superhit music that had a mental impact on the actor during that period.

Karz was directed by Subhash Ghai and was billed as a musical thriller. There was a special focus on music in the film, due to which the Laxmikant-Pyarelal duo gave memorable songs.

Songs from the film like Om Shanti Om, Ek Haseena Thi, Paisa Ye Paisa and Dard-e-Dil were popular everywhere at that time. He was voiced by veteran singers like Kishore Kumar and Mohammad Rafi, however, the film failed to attract audiences in theaters and proved to be a flop at the box office. Qurbani, released shortly thereafter, achieved tremendous success, further leaving the debt behind.




  • According to reports and Rishi Kapoor’s biography, he was deeply emotionally shocked by the fact that the film was a failure but its songs were becoming superhits everywhere. It is also mentioned at many places that during this period, he was under mental stress and looked troubled for some time. Later, with time, Karz was recognized again by the audience and today it is counted among the most iconic musical films of Bollywood.
