In view of the increasing cases of H1N1 (swine flu) and seasonal influenza in Delhi, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta called an emergency review meeting. Health Minister Pankaj Singh said that this year around 3,000 cases of influenza have been reported in Delhi. Of these, 2,308 cases are of H1N1 infection, while about 600-650 cases are related to other variants of influenza.
What did the government say about H1N1?
Health Minister Pankaj Singh, after a meeting with senior officials of the Health Department, MCD, NDMC and Delhi Cantonment Board, said that the situation in Delhi is under control. Appealing to the people not to panic, he said that sufficient beds, doctors and medicines are available in hospitals.
According to the minister, patients infected with H1N1 are recovering after treatment and being discharged from hospitals. At present, the condition of any patient has not been stated to be serious nor has any information been given about any patient being on ICU or ventilator.
2,200 cases of dengue in Delhi also
Preparedness for vector-borne diseases including H1N1, seasonal influenza and dengue was also reviewed at the meeting. The Health Minister said that according to the latest report, about 2,200 cases of dengue have been reported in Delhi. He said that till now no death has been reported in these cases.
What is H1N1? Know the symptoms
H1N1 is commonly known as swine flu. Its common symptoms may include high fever, cough, sore throat, headache, body ache and fatigue. According to experts, if serious symptoms like persistent high fever, difficulty in breathing or chest pain appear, then medical help should be sought without delay.
Government's appeal
The Delhi government has stressed on increasing monitoring of the current situation and continuing to review the preparedness of hospitals. Officials say that there is no need to panic at the moment, but the symptoms of H1N1 and other seasonal diseases should not be ignored.
