Ronaldo created history at the age of 41, made a new record in the FIFA World Cup
Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has achieved another historic achievement in the FIFA World Cup 2026. At the age of 41 years and 132 days, Ronaldo has become the oldest outfield player in World Cup history to make the starting eleven in a match.
Ronaldo broke the record of former Canada captain Atiba Hutchinson, who started the match against Croatia in the 2022 FIFA World Cup at the age of 39 years and 296 days. Ronaldo created a new history as soon as he entered the field in Portugal’s first match against DR Congo.
With this, Ronaldo has become only the second player in men’s football history to have played in six FIFA World Cups. Argentina’s great player Lionel Messi is supporting him in this special list. Ronaldo has represented Portugal in the 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022 and now 2026 World Cups.
However, despite individual achievements, Portugal’s performance was disappointing. The team had to be content with a 1-1 draw against DR Congo. Ronaldo could not leave much impact in the match. He touched the ball 25 times in the entire match, took three shots but not a single one was on target.
Portugal had taken the lead in the sixth minute of the match with a brilliant header from Joao Neves, but Yoane Visa scored an equalizer in the first half to bring DR Congo back into the contest.
In the second half, Portugal created many chances, but the team could not score the winning goal. For Ronaldo, this was the 10th consecutive major international match in which he failed to score a goal. His form is now becoming a matter of concern for Portugal.
DR Congo performed brilliantly in its first World Cup match since 1974, achieved an important point and made the world realize its potential.
