Rs.9330 crore unclaimed in PF account, if you have it too… know how to withdraw
EPF inoperative accounts unclaimed money 9330 crore: More than ₹16,600 crore in Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) accounts and Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) policies has gone unclaimed, with no claimant so far. According to official figures revealed in response to an RTI, as on March 31, 2026, more than ₹ 9,300 crore is lying in around 31 lakh inactive PF accounts in the country.
An uninherited amount of over ₹9,330 crore
It may be noted that the Union Ministry of Labor has clarified that no PF account has been declared as ‘Unclaimed Account’ by them, rather it is considered as ‘Inoperative Account’. Looking at the official figures, the largest non-inherited amount is deposited in these inactive EPF accounts, which is around ₹ 9,330.56 crore.
If LIC money is added, the figure goes up to ₹16,600 crore
Apart from PF accounts, LIC, the country’s largest insurance company, has unclaimed amount of ₹ 5,564.55 crore of policyholders. Thus in total, the amount deposited in dormant EPF accounts and the disinherited amount of LIC policyholders (including interest income) has left a total of ₹16,649.06 crore unclaimed.
How to withdraw your money from EPF?
If you have changed jobs in the past and have not withdrawn or transferred the PF amount deposited with the previous company, you need to keep these special points in mind:
-
Full amount can be withdrawn if the account remains inactive for 2 consecutive months.
-
KYC documents like your PAN, Aadhaar and bank account details must be linked with the UAN number.
-
If the account is inactive for more than 7 years, additional verification documents have to be submitted for claim settlement.
-
Depending on the tenure (years) of the PF account, tax may also be applicable as per rules.
