Voices like ‘Bol Baby Bol’ and ‘O Maria’ are now silent, veteran singer S. Janaki’s death
Famous playback singer of Indian film music S. Janaki died on Saturday at the age of 88. On Friday night, he was admitted to a private hospital in Mysore after having trouble breathing, where he breathed his last during treatment. His last rites will be performed on Sunday evening at his ancestral farmhouse in HD Kote taluka of Mysore.

S. was active in the music world for almost six decades. Janaki recorded more than 48 thousand songs in her career. He spread the magic of his melodious voice in many languages including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. His songs in Hindi films like ‘Bol Baby Bol’ (Meri Jung), ‘O Maria’ (Saagar), ‘Prabhu More Avgun’ (Sur Sangam) and ‘Gopala-Gopala’ (Humse Hai Muqabla) are still very popular. He was honored with many prestigious honors including four National Film Awards.
S. Janaki started her singing journey in 1957, while her first Hindi song was heard in the film Miss 58, released in 1958. In the year 2013, it was announced that he would be awarded Padma Bhushan, but he did not accept the honour. He believed that South Indian artists do not get proper recognition on time at the national level.
Many leaders and film personalities, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Draupadi Murmu, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay and actor Rajinikanth, expressed grief over his death. In 2017 S. Janaki had decided to stop recording new songs and said that now she wants to take rest after a long journey of music. With his demise, the Indian music world lost one of its most memorable and melodious voices.
