There was symbolism in the biggest bid of the SA20 Season 5 Player Auction.
On one side was experience in the form of former South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis, who was one of the stars of the first four seasons of the fledgling T20 league.
On the other, was Jason Rowles, an 18-year-old South African all-rounder, who has just begun to make a name for himself. It was the youngster who fetched the highest price.
In the end, Joburg Super Kings bought the services of the talented but relatively unproven Rowles for R2.90 million (approx Rs 1.69 crore), after a bidding war with MI Cape Town, making the South African U19 star the most expensive buy for the Super Kings so far.
The amount was surprising given that Rowles is yet to prove himself in international cricket.
However, the player has a lot of potential and his incredible talent fetched him big bucks.
A technically sound batsman and a left-arm spinner, Rowles has already played for South Africa Under-19s and has tasted action against England in the youth level. He has a double hundred and half a dozen of half-centuries to his name.
SA20 League Commissioner Graeme Smith was thrilled with the bidding.
“Jason Rowles was the stand-out player for me. It was a huge thrill to see an 18-year-old player's name being bandied around the auction tent.
It showed that the franchises have faith in our junior cricketers.
I think it shows the confidence they have in South Africa's future,” said Smith.
The amount fetched by the young sensation, according to reports, stunned everyone at the venue.
However, Rowles is set to learn a lesson in humility as he joins the Wanderers, where he will have to share the dressing room with someone who is a world away from him in terms of his cricketing journey.
Faf du Plessis returns as experience meets youth
At 42, du Plessis was the auction's most coveted veteran.
MI Cape Town and Joburg Super Kings battled it out for the former Proteas captain before JSK eventually lured him back to R2.70 million. The veteran batsman has been at the heart of the Super Kings' setup through the first four SA20 seasons and will now continue his association with the franchise.
His return means JSK will have a fascinating mix of past and potential in their squad.
Rowles embodies the potential of what South African cricket could be. Du Plessis encapsulates what it has already delivered.
JSK were also able to secure another T20 juggernaut in Kieron Pollard, who was signed for R1.50 million by the franchise. The 39-year-old all-rounder brings nearly 15,000 runs and 341 wickets in T20 cricket, not to mention decades of experience in the biggest franchise matches around the world.
The other additions to the Super Kings' squad included Proteas all-rounder Dayyaan Galiem (R200,000), Zimbabwe fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani (R500,000) and USA wicketkeeper-batter Andries Gous (R1 million). England all-rounder Jamie Overton was also signed as the franchise's wildcard.

MI Cape Town make their own statement
If JSK were able to invest big in both youth and experience, MI Cape Town were as well.
The franchise landed one of the auction's highest-profile players when they signed Proteas all-rounder Wiaan Mulder for R2.60 million and West Indies batter Shimron Hetmyer for R1.50 million.
New Zealand fast-bowling legend Trent Boult and young South African Oliver Whitehead were also added by MI Cape Town, who strengthened ahead of the fifth season.
For the franchise, the message was clear: to balance proven international quality with emerging South African flair. That theme is becoming increasingly prevalent in the SA20.
Pretoria Capitals chose to go for familiarity and experience when they brought back former Proteas batter Rassie van der Dussen for R500,000.
They will also welcome Temba Bavuma, South Africa's Test and ODI captain, as they try to take another step forward after finishing as runners-up last season.
However, three-time champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape were also able to complete their 19-player squad with Proteas left-arm seamer Nandre Burger and England all-rounder Craig Overton.
Burger will slot into an already formidable bowling group which also consists of Anrich Nortje, Marco Jansen, Adam Milne and Lutho Sipamla.
Therefore, the auction provided a glimpse into the wider evolution of the league. While big overseas names continue to be a draw, the franchises are also increasingly willing to invest big in players who could become the stars of South African cricket's future.
Smith believes that connection between the league and the national team is crucial.
“It's also very pleasing to see so many Proteas players getting picked up today. A strong League and a strong national team go hand in hand, and today was a good example of that,” he said.
A new SA20 chapter begins
The fifth season will kick off on January 17, 2027, when Sunrisers Eastern Cape host Pretoria Capitals at St George's Park in Gqeberha. It will repeat last season's final, but the squads that take the field will look slightly different.
There will still be international names, established franchise characters, and veterans who have batted and bowled their way to T20 legend status in the region.
But, somewhere amidst the mix, there will also be an 18-year-old who was the most expensive player in the auction.
Jason Rowles did not simply win a bidding war in Johannesburg. His R2.90 million move to Joburg Super Kings provided a glimpse into what SA20 believes the next generation of South African cricket could look like.
