Supreme Court reprimanded Samay and Ranveer, imposed fine of Rs 3 lakh each, said- “What kind of youth icon is this?”

New Delhi. A hearing was held in the Supreme Court on Tuesday in the case related to comedian Samay Raina and YouTuber Ranveer Allahabadia. During the hearing, the apex court expressed strong displeasure on both of them for not following the orders given earlier. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 3 lakh each on both of them and made it clear that further strict action would be taken if the amount is not deposited within the stipulated time. During the hearing, the court raised questions on the attitude of both and said that responsible behavior is expected from those who call themselves role models for the youth. The court commented that ‘he calls himself a ‘youth icon’. I don’t know what kind of youth icon he is. I get nervous just thinking about it

The bench said that the subsequent action did not appear to be in line with the assurance given in the last hearing. The court acknowledged that there is a gap between the assurances on record and the actual practice. During the hearing of the case, senior advocate Aparajita Singh told the court that Samay Raina is continuously doing his shows, but despite the court’s instructions, he neither contacted the SMA Foundation nor took the initiative to apologize or communicate with the people whose sentiments were hurt.

On this, the court said that only the person who knows how to respect others gets respect in public life. The court also said that till now both of them were given many opportunities but from their behavior it seemed that making fun of people has become a trend. At the same time, the lawyer appearing on behalf of Raina said in the court that there was no ego behind not being able to contact the SMA Foundation. He assured that he will convince his client to completely comply with the court’s instructions.

It is noteworthy that this matter is related to the show ‘India’s Got Latent’ which was aired last year. It is alleged that objectionable comments were made during the program on people suffering from disability and rare genetic diseases. Earlier, the Supreme Court had directed Samay Raina and other concerned people to tender an unconditional apology. Also warned that such content could be punishable under the Information Technology Act. At present the hearing of the case is going on.
