New Delhi: In the famous Punjab National Bank fraud case involving Nirav Modi, the Central Bureau of Investigation, taking major action at the international level, has succeeded in bringing the wanted accused Sandeep Mistry back to India from the United Arab Emirates. Sandeep Mistry, who was caught in UAE after Interpol's Red Corner Notice, was deported to India, where the CBI team took him into custody as soon as he reached Mumbai.
According to CBI, Sandeep Mistry is accused of playing an important role in the case related to bank fraud. Investigation revealed that he acted as an important link between various companies and their operations. It is alleged that he used to monitor the day-to-day functioning of the companies and give instructions through secret and self-deleting communication channels, so that the investigating agencies could not get hold of the evidence.
The investigating agency alleges that Mistry also played a role in preparing fake import-export documents to make the alleged international business of diamonds, gold and pearl jewelery appear genuine. Apart from this, there is also an allegation of pressurizing the alleged dummy directors created in the name of foreign companies and making them sign documents.
According to the CBI, the accused and his associates kept the directors of the dummy companies under pressure by threatening them with arrest and confiscating their electronic equipment. The investigation has also revealed his alleged role in withdrawing money from the bank accounts of UAE-based dummy companies. Chargesheet has been filed before the competent court in the case.
Red corner notice in July, return to India in September
On the request of CBI, a Red Corner Notice was published against Sandeep Mistry through Interpol channels in July 2026. After this, with the help of UAE officials, he was identified and arrested and the process of sending him to India started. His identification, arrest and return to India within just about two months has been described by the CBI as an example of effective coordination between international agencies.
Sandeep Mistry reached Mumbai at 11:55 pm on 28 September 2026, where he was taken into custody by officials of CBI's Bank Securities and Fraud Branch (BSFB), Mumbai. After this he was produced before the competent court from where he was sent to jail custody.
CBI acts as the National Central Bureau for Interpol in India and coordinates with various law enforcement agencies of the country through Bharatpol for information and action related to internationally wanted criminals. According to the CBI, over the last few years, more than 175 wanted criminals have been brought back to India, coordinating through Interpol channels.
