Senior Aam Aadmi Party leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh has accused Delhi Police of misbehaving, pushing and forcefully detaining him during peaceful protests. In this matter, he has submitted a notice and supplementary notice of breach of privilege and contempt of the House against the Delhi Police Commissioner and the concerned officers to Harivansh, Chairman of the Privileges Committee of the Rajya Sabha. Sanjay Singh has demanded accountability of police officers and action against allegedly guilty personnel.
Allegation of use of force thrice in 11 days
According to Sanjay Singh, physical force was used against him during the demonstration on three different occasions between October 2 and October 12, 2026. He has described these incidents as a violation of the dignity and democratic rights of an MP.
According to his allegation, during his march towards Jantar Mantar in protest against the removal of his name from the voter list on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti on October 2, policemen pushed him and dragged him on the ground. After this he was forcibly made to sit in the police bus.
On October 10, he was also claimed to have been detained during a protest against the functioning of the Election Commission and alleged electoral irregularities. At the same time, during the demonstration held around Janpath Metro Station, Sansad Marg and Jantar Mantar on October 12 in protest against the alleged irregularities in Special Intensive Review (SIR), Sanjay Singh alleged that force was used again.
He said that this kind of behavior towards an elected public representative is a serious matter and there should be an impartial investigation.
Told peaceful protest as constitutional right
Sanjay Singh said in his video message that expressing one's views peacefully is the constitutional right of every citizen. According to him, raising voice on issues related to democracy, voting rights and civil rights is not dependent on anyone's kindness, but is a right given by the Constitution.
He alleged that the police's behavior with the protesters was not in accordance with democratic values. Sanjay Singh said that it is not acceptable to present those who registered the protest as criminals.
Police Commissioner accused of not responding
The MP claimed that during the incidents he tried to contact the Delhi Police Commissioner through phone and messages, but did not receive any response. He said that being the head of the police force, the Commissioner should give clarification on the entire matter.
Sanjay Singh also demanded action against the SHO of Jafarpur Kalan police station and other concerned policemen. He said that if the police does not file an FIR against the guilty officers, he will approach the court.
Questions on the custody of women protesters also
Sanjay Singh also raised the issue of detention of women journalists, students and women activists in Jafarpur Kalan police station on 10 October. According to him, legal security provisions related to the detention of women were not followed.
He demanded an investigation into possible violations of the rules implemented under the Indian Civil Security Code (BNSS), 2023, and the police to clarify on what legal basis the women were kept in the police station and for how long.
Demand for fair investigation and accountability
Sanjay Singh has appealed to the Privileges Committee to consider the entire matter and fix the responsibility of the concerned officers. However, independent confirmation of the facts related to the allegations made by him and the police action and the official reply of the concerned party are yet to be revealed. Further action in the matter will depend on the stance of the Privileges Committee and related legal processes.
