Thailand Open 2026: Satwik-Chirag reach semis, Sindhu exits

Indian shuttlers had a mixed outing at the Thailand Open Super500 Tournament on Friday with leading men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty advancing to the semifinals while PV Sindhu making a hard-fought exit from the tournament.

Top seeds Satwik-Chirag beat Japanese sixth seeds Takumi Nomura and Yuichi Shimogami in straight sets 21-12, 21-13 in 41 minutes and PV Sindhu went down fighting to top seed and World No. 3 Akane Yamaguchi of Japan 21-19, 18-21, 15-21 in a little over an hour.

Sindhu’s loss brings curtain to India’s campaign in women’s singles with Devika Sihag, Malvika Bansod crashing out early.

Meanwhile, the World Tour Finals 2025 bronze medal-winning pair are eyeing their third Thailand Open title, having previously won in 2019 and 2024. In the semifinal, the Indian pair will take on third seed Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin of Malaysia.

Later in the day, World Championship bronze medalist Lakshya Sen will play second seed Kunlavut Vitidsarn in the quarterfinals, with the Thai shuttler holding a 7-4 head-to-head advantage over the Indian. He is the only Indian remaining in contention in the men’s singles.
