Senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Ashish Banerjee, a five-time MLA from Rampurhat and former deputy speaker of the assembly, was found dead at the party office in Rampurhat in Birbhum district. According to the police, his body was found hanging. An alleged suicide note has also been recovered from the spot.
Dead body found in party office-
According to the police, the body of Ashish Banerjee was found hanging in the TMC office in Rampurhat on Sunday morning. As soon as the information was received, the police team reached the spot and took possession of the body and sent it for post-mortem. Police have secured the incident spot and started investigating the matter.
Investigation increased after finding suicide note-
Police have informed that a suicide note has been recovered from the incident spot. However, what is written in the note and what was the reason behind the death will be officially confirmed only after the investigation is completed. The police are investigating the case keeping all the aspects in mind.
Had handled big responsibilities in Mamta government-
Ashish Banerjee had held important positions in the government led by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Apart from being the Deputy Speaker, he also held the responsibility of Education and Agriculture Minister. In his long political career, he was among the prominent leaders of TMC.
Was MLA from Rampurhat five times-
Ashish Banerjee was elected MLA from Rampurhat assembly seat five times. However, in the recent assembly elections, he had to face defeat at the hands of BJP's Dhruba Saha.
Had left the post of District President in June-
Ashish Banerjee had resigned from the post of Birbhum district president and district core committee chairman of TMC on June 2. At that time he had said that the core committee has become inactive and there is no need for its work now. After his resignation, he described himself as an ordinary member of the party.
Wave of mourning among supporters-
Ashish Banerjee lived with his family in Hattalapara area of Rampurhat. As soon as the news of his demise spread, a large number of TMC workers and supporters gathered outside the party office. There is an atmosphere of mourning in the area after the incident.
The police is trying to clarify the circumstances of the death on the basis of the post-mortem report and other facts of the investigation.
