William H. Macy has opened up about why he no longer wants to direct. As it turns out, the Shameless star no longer wishes to step behind the lens as a filmmaker for more projects, despite having directed several critically acclaimed films.
Speaking to News’s Tyler Treese recently about his new neo-Western flick, The Deputy, he was asked if he would direct another film. To this, Macy confessed, “I’m not dying to. It’s really hard, man, especially indie films. I have described it as you have about four weeks of prep, maybe five, where you create this imaginary structure. And it is beautiful. And it’s going to be one of the finest films ever made.”
“And on the first day of shooting, it catches fire. And for three and a half weeks, you’ll see the director and the producer throwing shit out the windows, trying to save anything they can from this original grand structure. Because there’s not enough money. There’s not enough time,” he continued.
Macy also discussed the challenges directors face when working with “a lot of people who are working a little over their pay grade,” adding that “things go wrong. So it’s a caution to do an indie film.”
At the same time, the actor-director also emphasized, “But I always find the spirit of them is so genuine because everyone’s there. Everyone’s working hard, pulling in the same direction for a piece of art. And they’re so enthusiastic. And it’s seductive.”

Macy’s new movie is out in theatres now: The R-rated crime thriller, The Deputy. In the film, he plays Sheriff Krueger, the local sheriff. Macy teams up with Duke Nicholson, Tiffany Haddish, Stephen Dorff, Julia Fox, and Billie Lourd in the movie.
The movie’s premise centers on a young deputy who is ordered to guard a fresh corpse in a small town. When the body vanishes, he uncovers decades of hidden local corruption.
