Share Market Crash: Loss of Rs 1.10 lakh crore in a single day, increased tension among investors; Know which stocks caused losses

Share market crash: Today (July 28, 2026) a period of slowness and ups and downs was seen in the stock market. Under the pressure of monthly expiry, there was neither any big rise nor any big fall in the market. However, amidst this calm trading, investors got a big shock. After the day’s trading, both Sensex and Nifty closed in the red. This minor decline has caused a loss of more than ₹ 1.10 lakh crore from the pockets of stock market investors.

Loss of ₹1.10 lakh crore in a single day

A day earlier on July 27, the total market cap of all the companies listed in the stock market was ₹ 4,80,33,146 crore. By the time the market closed today, this figure had fallen to ₹ 4,79,22,258 crore. Simply put, today’s sluggish trading has reduced investors’ total wealth by ₹1,10,887 crore. If we look at the broader market, today there was light buying in mid-cap stocks, but the small-cap index got completely beaten down due to selling pressure.

IT sector gave support

Mainly IT and real estate sectors tried to handle today’s falling market. The Nifty IT index registered a strong gain of more than 3 percent, while the realty sector also closed with a gain of more than 2 percent. On the other hand, FMCG and PSU bank stocks completely spoiled the market sentiment. A decline of more than 1 percent was seen in the Nifty FMCG index. Apart from this, Nifty PSU Bank Index fell 1 percent and Private Bank Index fell 0.40 percent.

Sensex-Nifty move slowly

Talking about the benchmark indices, they kept trading in very small ranges throughout the day. The Sensex closed at 76,765.92 with a slight fall of 69.86 points (0.09%). Meanwhile, Nifty 50 also declined marginally by 10.60 points (0.09%) and closed at 23,985.35. During trading, Sensex jumped 152 points to reach 76,988, but could not maintain the upper level. Nifty also reached a high of 24,041, but profit-booking ultimately pushed the market into the red.

Strong action seen in these stocks

17 out of 30 big Sensex stocks closed in the green today. Stocks like TCS, Zomato and Tech Mahindra saw the highest gains, resulting in profits for investors. In contrast, the biggest decline was seen in Hindustan Unilever (HUL), BEL and NTPC. Today a total of 4,424 stocks were traded on BSE. Of these, 109 stocks touched their one-year high (52-week high), while 84 stocks fell to their 52-week low.
