5X Penalty For Ola, Uber Driver If Hospital, Airport Rides Cancelled In Maharashtra
Maharashtra has introduced stricter rules for app-based cab services such as Ola, Uber and Rapido under the Maharashtra Motor Vehicle Aggregator Rules, 2026. The new regulations impose significantly higher penalties on drivers who cancel rides to critical destinations such as airports, railway stations and hospitals, while passengers cancelling rides without a valid reason will also face financial penalties.
The move aims to reduce last-minute cancellations, improve passenger convenience and make app-based transport services more reliable across the state.
Five Times Higher Penalty For Critical Rides
Under the new rules, drivers who cancel a ride after accepting a booking will generally have to pay a penalty of 10% of the total faresubject to a maximum of ₹100. The penalty amount will be credited directly to the passenger’s account.
However, if the cancelled trip is headed to an airport, railway station or hospitalthe penalty increases fivefoldrequiring the driver to pay 50% of the total fare to the passenger.
The government believes these destinations require greater reliability because delays can result in missed flights, trains or medical emergencies.
Late Arrival Also Treated As Cancellation
The new policy also introduces stricter accountability for drivers who arrive late.
If a driver fails to reach the designated pickup location within 10 minutes of the expected arrival time, it will be treated as a driver-initiated cancellation, attracting a ₹100 penalty.
This provision is expected to discourage unnecessary delays after accepting ride requests.
Passengers Also Face Cancellation Charges
The revised rules are not limited to drivers. Passengers who cancel a ride without a valid reason after a driver has been assigned will also have to pay a penalty.
Customers will be charged 5% of the total farecapped at ₹100and the amount will be credited directly to the driver’s account.
The objective is to discourage unnecessary cancellations from both sides and create a fairer ride-booking system.
New Responsibilities For Aggregator Platforms
Cab aggregators will also have to introduce technology-based features to minimise cancellations for essential journeys to airports, hospitals and railway stations.
The rules further require companies to provide an alternative vehicle if a cab breaks down during a trip. For rides within municipal limits, a replacement vehicle must be arranged within 30 minuteswhile for intercity journeys exceeding 100 kilometresanother cab must be provided within 60 minutes without charging passengers more than the originally agreed fare.
A Push For Better Passenger Experience
The new regulations come in response to frequent complaints about ride cancellations, fare negotiations and unreliable service. By imposing stricter penalties on both drivers and passengers while placing additional responsibilities on ride-hailing platforms, the Maharashtra government aims to improve accountability and ensure a smoother travel experience.
The policy is expected to particularly benefit commuters travelling to airports, railway stations and hospitals, where timely transportation is often critical.
Summary
Maharashtra’s new Motor Vehicle Aggregator Rules, 2026 introduce stricter penalties for ride cancellations on app-based taxi platforms. Drivers cancelling trips to airports, railway stations or hospitals will have to pay 50% of the fare as a penalty, while passengers cancelling rides without a valid reason will also be fined. The rules also require aggregators to provide quicker replacement vehicles during breakdowns and improve ride reliability across the state.
