Mumbai Domestic stock markets declined for the fourth consecutive trading session on Thursday. Due to selling pressure, BSE Sensex fell 570.59 points or 0.79 percent and closed at 71,909.70. This is the lowest level of Sensex since April 7, 2025. Similarly, the Nifty-50 index of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) closed at 22,421.95 points with a decline of 198.50 points or 0.88 percent.
This is the lowest level of Nifty after March 30, 2026. According to traders, investor sentiment remains weak due to the fear of increasing the repo rate during the monetary policy review of the Reserve Bank in October. This also affected the broader market. Nifty Midcap-50 fell by 1.11 percent and Smallcap-100 fell by 0.97 percent.
Highest pressure in auto sector
Except Nifty IT, all other major sector indices closed in the red. Nifty Auto had the biggest fall of 3.46 percent. Metal was down 2.35 percent, Media 2.33 percent, Consumer Durables 1.91 percent, FMCG 1.61 percent, Chemical 1.48 percent, Realty 1.46 percent and Oil & Gas index was down 1.32 percent. Of the 3,707 companies traded on NSE, shares of 2,572 closed with a decline, while 1,022 shares rose. There was no change in the shares of 113 companies.
24 out of 30 Sensex companies fell
Shares of 24 out of 30 Sensex companies closed in the red. Maruti Suzuki had the biggest decline of 4.59 percent. Mahindra & Mahindra shares fell 3.27 percent and Tata Steel fell 3.01 percent. Adani Ports was down 2.69 per cent, ITC 2.56 per cent, PowerGrid 2.23 per cent and Hindustan Unilever were down 2.17 per cent. A decline of 1.86 percent was recorded in Eternal, 1.85 percent in L&T, 1.81 percent in Reliance Industries and 1.65 percent in NTPC. Shares of BEL, UltraTech Cement, ICICI Bank, Bajaj Finance, Titan, Indigo, Axis Bank, Bharti Airtel and Trent also closed with losses. Shares of State Bank of India and Sun Pharma also declined.
Highest rise in Infosys
In the falling market, Infosys shares were the biggest gainer by rising 4.02 percent. TCS gained 1.43 percent. Shares of Kotak Mahindra Bank and Tech Mahindra also closed in the green. However, shares of HCL Technologies were down 1.38 percent and HDFC Bank was down 1.36 percent.
Mixed trend in Asian markets
Among the global markets, there was a rise in the major markets of Asia. Japan's Nikkei closed 3.30 percent higher, Hong Kong's Hang Seng 0.37 percent and China's Shanghai Composite closed 0.31 percent higher. In early trading in European markets, Britain's FTSE was down 0.80 percent, while Germany's DAX was up marginally by 0.04 percent.
