Canadian singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes has marked the 10th anniversary of his second studio album, Illuminatereflecting on how much his life has changed since its release and expressing gratitude for the love and friendship he has received from fans over the years.
Mendes took to Instagram to share a series of photos and videos from the Illuminate era. Looking back at the memories, he said revisiting the material made him realize how dramatically life can change over a decade.
“Oh man what a feeling to go through all these videos and photos. I guess what I feel is that in 10 years your life can really change in ways you never imagined for yourself, but ultimately those parts of us that make art and play and laugh come from the same pure place no matter how much time has passed… guys thank you,” Mendes wrote.
He added that the album had a lasting impact on his life and thanked his fans for standing by him.
“This album changed my life forever and I'll never ever get tired of saying this.. I am so grateful for your love and friendship over the years. Here's to 10 years of illuminate and here's to 10 more,” he wrote, while announcing that Illuminate (10th Anniversary Edition) is now available.
Released in September 2016, Illuminate was Mendes' second studio album and followed his 2015 debut album, Handwritten. The album debuted at number one in the US and featured singles including “Treat You Better” and “There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back”.
Mendes first gained attention in 2013 by posting song covers on a video-sharing platform. The following year, he came to the attention of manager Andrew Gertler and Island Records A&R executive Ziggy Chareton, leading to his record deal.
His self-titled debut EP arrived in 2014, followed by Handwritten in 2015. The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, making Mendes one of five artists to achieve a number-one debut before turning 18.
His breakout single “Stitches” topped the UK charts and reached the top 10 in the US and Canada. Mendes later released “Señorita” in 2019, which reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100.
