Islamabad/New York. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif can meet US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session on September 23. This information has been given in a report published in the media quoting highly placed sources.
According to the report, US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump will host a dinner in honor of the heads of state and government attending the United Nations General Assembly on the evening of September 23 at the Lotte New York Palace Hotel on Madison Avenue. Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has also received an invitation to participate in it.
It is believed that a meeting between Trump and Sharif may take place during this time. In the meeting, Sharif is likely to raise issues related to India-Pakistan, especially the Indus Water Treaty.
First face to face meeting after 'Board of Peace'
According to sources, the dinner will also give Sharif an opportunity to interact with heads of state and government of other countries. This will be the first face-to-face meeting between Trump and Sharif after the first meeting of the 'Board of Peace' held in Washington in February.
The two leaders have previously met at the White House in September 2025 and during the peace conference held in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt in October last year.
Shehbaz Sharif will reach New York a day before the dinner and address the UN General Assembly on September 25.
Pakistan can raise the issue of Indus Water Treaty
Quoting sources in the media report, it has been said that the Prime Minister of Pakistan may raise the issue of postponing the Indus Water Treaty on behalf of India in his UNGA address. This treaty, signed between India and Pakistan under the mediation of the World Bank in 1960, has provisions related to the sharing and use of water of six rivers of the Indus River system.
Pakistan has been continuously raising this issue on international forums. In such a situation, this matter is likely to be discussed during the possible meeting with Trump.
Pakistan's concern increased after BRICS conference?
During the BRICS conference that concluded on Sunday, India signed important agreements with many countries. Especially India's increasing contact with China is being considered important for Pakistan.
In such a situation, meeting with Trump can be another opportunity for Pakistan to strengthen its relations with America and present its stand on regional issues. However, official information about what issues will actually be discussed in the meeting has not been revealed yet.
