Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was seen walking briskly towards Russian President Vladimir Putin after the leaders attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit gathered for a formal group photo in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. As soon as the group photo was completed and Putin started moving from the podium, Shehbaz Sharif went to the Russian President and was seen trying to stop him by holding his hand. After this both stood together and talked for a while. The conversation, captured on video, took place when Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping shook hands and exchanged pleasantries before joining other leaders for a group photo.
Before getting photographed, Putin had also greeted PM Modi. A day earlier, the Indian Prime Minister had held an important bilateral meeting with the Russian President in Bishkek, in which both discussed India-Russia relations as well as trade, investment, energy and fertilizer security. In this meeting, PM Modi also reiterated his appeal to end the Russia-Ukraine war. He said every day spent in conflict pushes humanity back and urged both sides to move from a never-ending war to peace.
Good understanding between Modi and Putin
This meeting of PM Modi and Putin took place before the Russian President's visit to India later this month, which will be for the annual BRICS summit. The two leaders also traveled together in Putin's limousine to the opening ceremony of the World Nomad Games in Bishkek on Monday.
PM Modi got a big honor
The SCO summit has brought together the leaders of 10 member countries including India, China, Russia and Pakistan. This is happening at a time when geopolitical equations are changing and greater focus is being given to regional security, connectivity and cooperation. At the summit venue, PM Modi was also seen shaking hands with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi and sharing a warm moment with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, with the two leaders even hugging each other during the event.
