Sheikh Hasina: India reiterated its stand on Sheikh Hasina’s return, called extradition a matter of legal process

Amidst the ongoing discussions regarding the possible return of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, India has made its official stand clear (Sheikh Hasina). The Ministry of External Affairs has said that India’s policy in this matter remains the same as before and no change has been made in it.

The Foreign Ministry’s reaction comes at a time when Sheikh Hasina has recently expressed her desire to return home. After his statement, once again the discussion on the issue of extradition between India and Bangladesh has intensified.

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that there has been no change in India’s stand on Sheikh Hasina’s issue. He said that any case related to extradition is looked into under the legal process and it will also be settled as per the law.

Bangladesh has continuously demanded

Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina came to India in August 2024 following political developments and has been living here since then. Recently she said in an interview that she wants to return to Bangladesh voluntarily, even if she gets arrested there or faces other risks. On the other hand, Bangladesh government has requested India several times for his extradition.

India’s statement on South China Sea also Sheikh Hasina

The Ministry of External Affairs also presented its stand on the issue of South China Sea. India supported unhindered trade, freedom of navigation and overflight on sea routes. At the same time, India reiterated its support for the decision given by the International Arbitration Tribunal in the year 2016, in which China’s extensive claims on the South China Sea were rejected.

Emphasis on rule based system

India said that all disputes related to maritime areas should be resolved in accordance with international law and the rule-based system. This statement of the Ministry of External Affairs has come at a time when many countries have also recently reiterated their support for the 2016 international decision related to the South China Sea.
