Inspection reveals cockroaches, moldy vegetables, expired food and serious forms of unhygienic conditions.
Strict action against the establishments concerned after various violations including catering without a license were found.
A special inspection by the Food and Drug Administration has revealed the shocking fact that food safety rules are being violated in the kitchens of renowned cricket and sports clubs in Mumbai, known for their membership, prestige and elite customers. Seven clubs, canteens and restaurants in Mumbai were inspected under the ‘Safe Food, Safe Maharashtra’ campaign being conducted across the state. The FSSAI licenses of five of them were immediately suspended.

The establishments in which action was taken include Cricket Club of India, R. K. These include Juhu Gymkhana, The Aparna-Juhu Gymkhana, MIG Cricket Club (Bandra East) and Willingdon Sports Club. Goregaon Sports Club has been given a closure notice and one establishment has been issued a correction notice.
Cockroaches, flies and mouldy vegetables in the kitchen
During the inspection, cockroaches, fly infestation, mouldy vegetables, expired food items, serious deficiencies in food storage, lack of cleanliness and violation of safety rules by the staff were found in the kitchen at many places. It was also observed that there was a risk of cross-contamination as vegetarian and non-vegetarian food items were kept together at some places. Notably, the inspection revealed that a third-party catering organization was operating at MIG Cricket Club without a valid FSSAI license, while the administration took a strict stance after spoiled vegetables, expired food storage and an unsanitary kitchen were found at Cricket Club of India. This campaign is being implemented under the guidance of Food Safety Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, and this action has given a clear message that no establishment that compromises the health of citizens will be supported.
Action also taken against the old ‘Poornima’ hotel
The Food and Drug Administration has also taken action against the old and famous Purnima restaurant in the Fort area of Mumbai. The inspection found mold on raw vegetables, storage of raw and cooked food together in the refrigeration unit, fish infestation, unclean drains, rusty walls, lack of medical records and violation of safety rules while handling food. Concluding that these serious errors can pose a risk to the health of citizens, the FDA has suspended the FSSAI license of Purnima Restaurant with immediate effect. A decision will be taken to restore the license only after all the errors are rectified and food safety rules are followed.
