Team India’s condition worsened under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer, lost the number 1 position in T20 list after four years.
India Loses Number 1 T20 Ranking Under Iyer’s Captaincy: The Indian team’s tour of England under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer was very disappointing. First there was a defeat in the T20 series against Ireland, then England defeated India 4–0 in the five-match T20 series. Due to continuous poor performance, Team India could not even open a winning account on the entire tour.
Lost number-1 ranking after 1608 days
India has suffered a big setback after losing the series against England. Team India has now slipped from number-1 to second place in the ICC men’s T20 team rankings. With this, India’s wonderful journey of being number-1 for 1608 days also ended. England has achieved the top position by performing strongly in this series.
Batsmen scored runs, bowlers remained ineffective
In the last match of the series, England batted first and scored a big score. Captain Jos Buttler played an explosive inning of 131 runs in 64 balls, while Harry Brook scored 95 runs in 45 balls. Both the batsmen attacked the Indian bowlers fiercely. Axar Patel proved to be the most expensive bowler from India. He gave 63 runs in four overs and could not take any wicket.
India’s attempt failed
Chasing the target, Ishan Kishan scored 56 runs in 35 balls for India, while Tilak Verma played a quick inning of 53 runs in 25 balls. Sanju Samson also tried to give a fast start by scoring 27 runs in 14 balls, but the rest of the batsmen could not make a big partnership and the team remained far away from victory.

Now eye on BCCI review meeting
The impact of decline in T20 ranking may be seen in future also. To qualify directly for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, India will have to remain Asia’s No. 1 T20 team till the end of 2026. In such a situation, BCCI will review the performance of the team after the England tour. After the upcoming ODI series, important decisions regarding the team and support staff can be taken in the board meeting.
