Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani Passes Away: Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the former Emir of Qatar and the architect of modern Qatar, has died at the age of 74. On his death, the Government of India has announced one day national mourning on Monday. Giving this information on Sunday, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that national mourning will be observed across the country in honor of the late leader.

Qatar’s highest government body, the Amiri Diwan, officially confirmed the death of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani on Sunday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed deep condolences on his demise and described him as a visionary leader and a true friend of India.

PM Modi expressed grief

Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on social media platform Deeply saddened by the passing of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. He said that under the leadership of Sheikh Hamad, Qatar established new dimensions of development and prosperity. The Prime Minister also recalled his meeting with him during his visit to Qatar in February 2024. He also expressed his condolences to the current Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the royal family and the people of Qatar.

Who was Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani?

Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani ruled Qatar from 1995 to 2013. He is considered the creator of modern Qatar. During his tenure the country made unprecedented progress in the economic, social and diplomatic fields.

In June 1995, he took power from his father Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani in a bloodless palace coup. He then paid special attention to the development of Qatar’s vast natural gas resources, making the country one of the most prosperous countries in the world.

Gave global recognition to Qatar

Under the leadership of Sheikh Hamad, Qatar achieved remarkable success in the energy sector. Due to increased natural gas production, the country’s per capita income reached the highest category in the world. He also made Qatar’s foreign policy more active, thereby strengthening the country’s political and diplomatic role on the global stage.
