Shubman Gill on the cusp of passing Sunil Gavaskar in the elite list

Shubman Gill was at his best in the IND vs AFG first ODI on Saturday, June 13. Chasing 195, the Men in Blue completed the task with seven wickets in hand. Gill scored an unbeaten 84 off 66 balls, laced with 11 fours and 2 sixes, with his runs coming at a strike rate of 127.27. He added 70 runs with Ishan Kishan for the second wicket.

India’s captain completed 3000 runs in the fifty-over format, and he is now on the verge of going past legendary Sunil Gavaskar in the elite list. The right-handed batter needs 56 runs to surpass Gavaskar in the list of players with the most ODI runs for the Men in Blue.

In 108 ODI matches, Gavaskar accumulated 3092 runs, including one century and 27 fifties.

Gill has posted 3037 runs at an average of 57.30 in 62 matches. He has struck 8 hundreds and 18 half-centuries. He replaced Rohit Sharma as Team India’s ODI skipper before the Australia series in 2025. He is also leading India in Test cricket.

India batters with the most runs in ODIs

Sachin Tendulkar topped the batting charts for India in ODIs. In 463 ODIs, he scored 18426 runs and is the only player to take his tally to above 15000 ODI runs.

With 14797 runs, Virat Kohli is second in the list. He has 54 centuries, the most by any batter in the history of the format. Rohit Sharma is third, with 11593 runs in 275 innings. Rohit was India’s captain when the team clinched the Champions Trophy title in 2025. Sourav Ganguly (11221) and Rahul Dravid (10768) are fourth and fifth, respectively.
