Shubman Gill reached par with Sachin-Kohli, crossed the 500-run mark this IPL season too

Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Shubman Gill played an inning of 85 runs in 49 balls against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on May 16, which included 5 fours and 7 sixes. However, this innings of Gill could not help GT and it was left 29 runs behind in the huge chase of 248. As long as Gill was at the crease at the Eden Gardens Stadium, GT’s hopes were alive. As soon as he was out in the 17th over, GT’s defeat was certain. Even though Gill’s innings went in vain, during this time he made a big record in his name.

Gill became the fifth captain to score more than 500 runs in two consecutive IPL seasons. He also equaled the records of legends like Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli. Sachin achieved this feat in the 2010 and 2011 seasons, while Kohli achieved this feat in the 2015 and 2016 seasons. Gill has scored 552 runs in the current season, whereas last year he scored 650 runs with his bat.

Two players David Warner and KL Rahul have achieved the feat of scoring 500 plus runs in 3 consecutive IPL seasons as captain. Warner captained Sunrisers Hyderabad and scored more than 500 runs in the 2015, 2016 and 2017 seasons. Whereas KL Rahul had achieved this feat while captaining Punjab Kings in 2020 and 2021. After this he took charge of Lucknow Super Giants and equaled Warner by scoring 500 plus runs.

Gill’s bat against KKR again

In the huge run chase, Gill batted carefully in the powerplay. In this phase he hit only 1 four and 1 six. As soon as the field opened, he took Sunil Narayan on the radar and hit 2 sixes in 3 balls. After this, Gill crossed the 500-run mark in IPL 2026 by hitting a six against Anukul Roy in the 9th over. Gill also sent the next ball for a six. He ended this over with a boundary.

Gill completed his fifty in 33 balls. This was his third consecutive half-century against KKR. He became the sixth batsman to do so. Before him, Suresh Raina (2016-17), KL Rahul (2016-18), Virat Kohli (2018-19), AB de Villiers (2019-21) and Quinton de Kock (2021-22) had scored three consecutive fifties against KKR. Gill changed gears after scoring his half-century but Narayan sealed GT’s defeat by taking his wicket.
