Singaporean billionaire Peter Lim sells 42% stake in Valencia football club

Pitchwise Holdings has agreed to acquire the stake, the club said in a statement by Valencia on Friday.

Pitchwise is a consortium of investors including Penner Sports Group and the family offices of KKR co-founders George Roberts and Henry Kravis, according to Bloomberg.

The new backers will inject 100 million euros in fresh capital that will be immediately available for direct investment into the club, per the statement.

Ann Rodriguez and Corey Woolfolk, the sports executives leading Pitchwise, are expected to assume leadership positions at Valencia once the transaction, pending regulatory approval, is completed.

Meriton Holdings will retain a majority stake in Valencia, while Lim’s son, Kiat, will remain as the club’s president.

“With Ann, Corey, George and Pitchwise Holdings, I am confident that we are entering a new era and we can achieve great things for Valencia,” Kiat said in the statement.

The deal aims to help the club navigate a major infrastructure transition as it prepares to move into the Nou Mestalla stadium ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which Spain will co-host, according to The Business Times.

Kiat has been overseeing the construction of the 70,000-seat stadium, set to open next year. Valencia borrowed 322 million euros last year to finance the project.

The transaction reflects the full scope of Valencia’s assets, including its men’s and women’s football teams and the stadium, the club said.

It comes as the once football powerhouse struggles to stay in La Liga, Spain’s top football division. The club currently sits second-to-last in the league and is at risk of falling to the second tier.

The deal also follows a trend where wealthy families and institutional investors are increasingly seeking exposures to sports franchises for their global fan bases, media rights and potential for commercial growth, Reuters reported.

The elder Lim first acquired a 70.4% stake in Valencia through Meriton in 2014 for 100 million euros and later raised his holdings to 91.5% by the end of 2024.

The 73-year-old self-made billionaire ranked 33rd on Forbes‘ list of the richest people in Singapore in September with an estimated wealth of $1.85 billion.

He made his fortune as a stockbroker, earning the title of Singapore’s “remisier king” in the 1980s, before turning to private investment.

He currently controls Singapore-listed healthcare firm Thomson Medical Group and also has interests in property, sports and education.
