Veteran playback singer Anuradha Paudwal has recently been embroiled in controversy after her comments about the LGBTQ community during a podcast went viral.

The singer raised questions about the community’s contribution to society while discussing marriage and changing social values, leading to widespread criticism online. In journalist Shubhankar Mishra’s YouTube podcast, Anuradha was asked whether she felt that the institution of marriage has weakened in the last few years. In response, he linked the decline in marriage to the rights being given to the LGBTQ community.

What did Anuradha Paudwal say?

Sharing her views, the singer said that the “sanctity” of marriage has diminished and she questioned the role of LGBTQ persons in the society. She said, “There is no sanctity left in marriage anymore. The reason for this is the rights given to the LGBTQ community. What are they contributing to the society? I want to know this.” Anuradha further said that she believes that a man and a woman getting married, starting a family and raising children is the traditional model that contributes to society. He also acknowledged that he may have made some mistakes, but added that he did not understand how LGBTQ relationships contribute to social well-being.

Social media users trolled

These comments immediately drew criticism on social media platforms, with many users arguing that sexual orientation has no bearing on a person’s contribution to society. One user wrote that LGBTQ people contribute to every profession, be they doctors, engineers, artists, teachers or taxpayers, and added, “Being gay is a sexual orientation, not a profession.” Another user wrote, “Gay couples also want to start families, legally adopt children and contribute to society like everyone else.”
