At least six people were killed after a pickup vehicle transporting milk plunged into a deep gorge in the Urman area under the Taklech police outpost in Himachal Pradesh’s Shimla district on Friday, officials said.
According to the local administration, all six occupants of the vehicle died in the accident. Police and district authorities rushed to the scene immediately after receiving information about the incident and launched a rescue and recovery operation.
Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Rampur, Harsh Amrinder Singh Negiconfirmed the fatalities while speaking over the phone to ANI.
“A pickup vehicle carrying milk met with an accident in the Urman area under Taklech, resulting in the death of all six occupants. Police and the local administration reached the spot immediately, and the bodies are being recovered and sent for post-mortem. The exact cause of the accident will be known after a detailed investigation,” the SDM said.
Rescue Teams Reach Accident Site
Following the accident, police personnel, officials from the district administration and local residents reached the gorge to carry out rescue and recovery operations. The bodies of the deceased were retrieved from the accident site and shifted for post-mortem examination.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims, and officials said their families are being informed through the appropriate channels.
The accident occurred in a mountainous stretch of road in the Urman area, where rescue operations were carried out under challenging terrain conditions.
Investigation Underway
Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation to determine the exact circumstances that led to the accident.
Officials said the cause of the mishap has not yet been established. Investigators will examine all possible factors, including road conditions, vehicle condition and other circumstances, before arriving at any conclusion.
Forensic and technical assessments, along with statements from witnesses, will form part of the investigation.
Authorities Await Investigation Findings
The district administration said further details will be shared after the investigation progresses.
Officials urged motorists travelling through hilly regions to exercise caution, particularly on narrow mountain roads, while reiterating that the cause of Friday’s accident remains under investigation.
No additional casualties or injuries were reported in connection with the incident.
