A diving instructor in Argentina has been charged with culpable homicide after a young tourist died during a scuba diving test. 23-year-old influencer Sofia Devries died while diving with her love partner off the coast of Punta Cuevas in the south of the country. She was trying to get an international diving certificate. Seven other divers were also with him. They were swimming near the wreck of the ship ‘Hu Shun Yu’, which has now been converted into an underwater park.
This group was led by 26 year old instructor Thiago Nahuel Pocovi. He has been charged with culpable homicide following the death of this young woman in February. Prosecutors allege that due to very low visibility in the water, it became difficult to keep a direct eye on the entire group. When the group reached the bottom of the sea, Sofia and her partner Leonardo Alonso were left without any direct supervision.
According to local media reports, after some time Sophia started feeling uneasy and removed her regulator. During this time his partner tried to help him, but sadly his oxygen ran out.
It took two days for the Argentine Naval Prefecture to find his body at a depth of 20 meters (66 ft). She was trying to get an international diving certificate. According to local media, scuba diving had always been his passion.
No one else’s role came forward
The autopsy revealed that Sophia died due to drowning and there was no indication of any other person’s role in it. But Chubut’s public prosecutor’s office accused Pokovy – a certified diver working for Freediving Patagonia – of acts that went against the protocols and safety standards governing the activities of diving instructors.
In Argentina, culpable homicide is a crime punishable by up to five years in prison. Apart from this, a person found guilty of this crime is barred from holding any government post for ten years. Pokovy participated in the hearing of the case remotely, but did not testify. Both he and the company are being investigated for their possible role in Sophia’s death.

Dead body found 60 feet deep
Sofia lived in Moreno, a western suburb of Buenos Aires. He obtained a degree in Social Communication and Public Relations from the Argentine University of Enterprise. At the time of her death, she was studying for a degree in Business Administration at the National Technological University. Sofia lived in a suburb of Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina. After the incident in February, it took two days for the rescue team to find his body. She went on the trip with her partner Leonardo Alonso. His body was found at a depth of more than 60 feet from the surface of the water.

Used to share photos on social media
She had written a book named ‘Stories for Inquisitive Minds’ and worked in communication in her partner’s company. Sophia used to share pictures and videos of her work as a makeup artist and her travels.
