After an indefinite hunger strike that continued for about 26 days, social activist Sonam Wangchuk ended her fast on Friday. He took something for the first time in the presence of Union Health Minister JP Nadda and Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram. During this time his wife Gitanjali Angmo was also present with him.

In the video that surfaced from the hospital, it was seen that both the Union Ministers encouraged Wangchuk. After this, he took the first sip from a cup from the hand of JP Nadda and ended his 26-day old fast. Whose video is becoming increasingly viral on social media.

Important meeting in the hospital

According to sources, JP Nadda and Dr. Jitendra Singh had also discussed with Union Home Minister Amit Shah before meeting Wangchuk. After this both the ministers reached Medanta Hospital and had a long conversation with Wangchuk. During this meeting he formally decided to end his fast.

‘I am happy to break the fast’

After ending the fast, Sonam Wangchuk held the hands of both the Union Ministers and said, “I am happy to end my fast. Thank you all.” After this, he looked towards his wife Geetanjali Angmo and said that she always stood by him in every difficult time and expressed his gratitude towards her.

Was admitted to hospital due to deteriorating health

Wangchuk had started an indefinite hunger strike on June 28 demanding reforms in the education system and accountability in alleged paper leak cases. He was associated with CJP’s demonstration at Jantar Mantar. After his health deteriorated last week, he was first taken to Safdarjung Hospital, but he refused to break the fast there too. Later his wife moved the Delhi High Court. After the court’s permission, he was shifted to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram for treatment.

Weight loss more than 11 kg

According to medical sources, Sonam Wangchuk’s weight had reduced by about 11 kg during the 26-day hunger strike. Doctors were continuously monitoring him and considering his health, he was advised to end the fast.

A demand was also made not to take action against the youth.

During his fast, Wangchuk had also appealed to the government not to take any punitive action against the youth involved in the student movement. He included this in his main demands.

Have done long fast before also

This is not the first time that Sonam Wangchuk has gone on a long hunger strike over some issue. Earlier in the year 2024 also, he had fasted for about 21 days with only water and salt to demand the rights related to Ladakh. During that time, he protested under the open sky in an area with temperatures below zero.
