Noted social activist and educationist Sonam Wangchuk has ended her 26-day indefinite hunger strike. He took this decision after receiving concrete assurance from the government that his demands would be met. Wangchuk made the official announcement of ending the fast after meeting Union Minister JP Nadda and Dr. Jitendra Singh at Medanta Hospital around midnight on Thursday. While sharing the information on social media platform ‘X’, Sonam Wangchuk wrote, "Just now, in the presence of Union Minister JP Nadda, Dr Jitendra Singh and senior leaders of the apex body of Leh-Ladakh, I finally ended my fast after 26 days."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s reaction Welcoming Sonam Wangchuk’s decision to end her fast, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his reaction on ‘X’. PM Modi wrote, "I urge Sonam ji to follow her daily routine as per the advice of doctors and regain her weight as soon as possible. I pray to God that Sonam ji remains healthy."

In the presence of Wangchuk’s wife Geetanjali Angmo and other representatives in the hospital, Union Health Minister JP Nadda read out the assurances given by the government: No case against the protesters: The government will take a positive stand if cases are not registered against those who demonstrated peacefully at Jantar Mantar in Delhi and those who participated in the Parliament march on July 20. Discussion on education reforms: There will be detailed discussion in the Parliament on important topics like paper leak in competitive examinations and education reforms. Compensation to the families of the victims: The government is sympathetically considering giving appropriate compensation to the families of the students who lost their lives due to the recent NEET paper leak. Sonam Wangchuk told that a total of 65 MPs from different political parties had appealed to her to end the fast by meeting her personally or by sending letters. He said that this step has been taken after agreeing to several conditions to maintain peace in the country and prevent possible violence. CJP founder Abhijit Dipke praised Wangchuk’s sacrifice and said that his peaceful protest at Jantar Mantar will continue until Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigns from his post. The entire incident of 26 days is noteworthy that Sonam Wangchuk was on fast at Jantar Mantar on June 28 demanding irregularities in competitive examinations, reform in the education system and resignation of the Union Education Minister. During this period his weight decreased by about 11 kg. On July 18, Delhi Police admitted him to Safdarjung Hospital citing health reasons. However, after his wife Gitanjali Angmo filed a petition in the Delhi High Court, he was shifted to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram on the court’s orders, where he ended his fast after talking to the ministers.
