This new tariff will replace the global duties implemented by US President Donald Trump earlier this year, which are now going to end. US Trade Representative (USTR) Jameson Greer, while announcing the new tariff structure, made it clear that these rules will become effective from 12:01 pm Eastern Time on Friday. According to USTR’s fact sheet, these new tariffs will range from 10% to 12.5%, covering about 99.4% of total US trade. 10% tariff on India, how much will be the impact on trade? This move of America is going to have a direct impact on big economies like India, China and the European Union (EU). America has fixed the new tariff rate at 10% on goods imported from India and 16 other countries. It is noteworthy that America, along with being India’s second largest trading partner, is also the largest market for Indian exports. If we look at the data of the Commerce Department, in the year 2025, there was bilateral trade of about 141 billion US dollars between the two countries, of which India’s exports were 87.3 billion dollars. USTR takes tough stance on forced labor According to AFP reporting, USTR Jameson Greer said, "A ban on imports made from or involving forced labor has been in place in the US for nearly a century and is strictly enforced. Now the time has come that our other trading partners also take similar steps."

The Supreme Court had canceled old tariffs in February. Actually, in February this year, the US Supreme Court had canceled many old tariff decisions of President Trump. After this, President Trump used special powers to re-impose the 10% tariff on imports. However, that arrangement was valid only for 150 days, which was ending this Friday. Now the newly announced tariffs will take its place. Heavy tariff of 12.5% ​​on China and Japan, who got relief? Under the recent announcement, countries that have banned forced labor or have committed to doing so will face a reduced tariff of 10%. This category includes India along with Canada, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Britain. On the other hand, a heavy tariff of 12.5% ​​has been imposed on dozens of countries including China, Japan and South Korea. However, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Switzerland and the EU will get some relief as they already have trade agreements with the US. Additionally, sectors that already have separate tariffs in place (such as steel and aluminium) will not be affected by this decision.
