Sonam Wangchuk refuses to take treatment, wife demands impartial investigation

Social activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on hunger strike at Jantar Mantar for the last 20 days demanding the resignation of the Union Education Minister in the NEET paper leak case, was admitted to VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital by Delhi Police on Saturday morning. According to the hospital, Wangchuk has so far refused to end his hunger strike and has also refused to take IV fluids, ORS and medicines as part of his treatment.

Health Bulletin: Dehydration, low potassium and increased ketones

According to the medical bulletin issued by the hospital, Wangchuk was fully conscious at the time of admission. His pulse, blood pressure and oxygen levels were found to be normal, but there were signs of dehydration, potassium deficiency and acid-base imbalance in the body.

According to doctors, his blood sugar was recorded at 78 mg/dl. At the same time, the level of ketones in urine test was 1+ at the time of admission, which increased to 3+ by afternoon. Doctors advised immediate IV fluids, ORS and necessary medicines, but Wangchuk refused all medical interventions. The hospital administration said that his condition is being continuously monitored.

Wife’s allegation: No treatment without consent, refusal to give medical report

Wangchuk’s wife Geetanjali J Angmo demanded that no treatment be initiated without his explicit consent. He alleged that doctors told the family that Wangchuk’s potassium level had dropped from 4.3 to 2.9, but a copy of the medical report was not provided despite repeated requests. He said that non-availability of a copy of the report raises questions on transparency and the family’s trust has been affected.

Demand for independent medical examination

Angmo said the family wants an independent medical examination before any treatment is allowed. He says that the decision on further treatment will be taken only after testing from another lab. Also, he has written a letter to the Safdarjung Hospital administration demanding to provide copies of all medical reports and not to give any oral or intravenous medicine or fluid without their permission.
