Former South African captain and top-order batsman Dean Elgar has announced his retirement from professional cricket, revealing when he will play his last match. Elgar is currently playing for Essex in the County Championship. On Wednesday (August 26), Essex shared a video of Elgar discussing his retirement.

The African legend revealed that he will retire from professional cricket after the 2026 County Championship. However, no date has been given for his final match. In the video, Elgar said, “I am retiring from professional cricket. I would like to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart.
Retired from international cricket in 2024
Dean retired from international cricket in January 2024. He played his last Test match against India in Cape Town. After that he continued to play professional cricket. Now, Elgar has completely retired from cricket.
12 years international career
Elgar’s international career spanned 12 years. He made his debut in 2012. During this time, the top order batsman played 86 Tests and 8 ODIs for South Africa. In 152 Test innings, Elgar scored 5347 runs at an average of 37.92, including 14 centuries and 23 half-centuries. In the remaining seven ODI innings, he scored 104 runs, with a high score of 42.
A very long professional career
Looking at Elgar’s professional cricket career, he has been playing cricket for a long time. In 2006, Elgar led South Africa to the Under-19 World Cup. He played a total of 279 first-class matches, 178 List A matches and 104 T20 matches. He scored 18,981 runs in 486 first-class innings, including 55 centuries and 77 half-centuries. In List A, he scored 6,264 runs with 10 centuries and 45 fifties. In the remaining 99 T20 innings he scored 2,594 runs at an average of 32.02 and a strike rate of 115.08.
