Southern Vietnam heatwave expected to ease this week as thunderstorms return
The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting reported in a Tuesday weather bulletin that southern Vietnam has continued to experience sweltering weather in recent days.
On Sunday and Monday, the southern region recorded peak temperatures of 35-37 C, with some locations exceeding 37 C. Relative humidity is forecast to remain low, hovering between 50% and 55%.
On Sunday, the highest recorded temperatures included 38 C in Dong Nai Province, 38 C in Tay Ninh Province, and 37.4 C in Ho Chi Minh City.
The heat slightly eased on Monday, when the highest temperatures reached 36.7 C in Tay Ninh, 36.5 C in HCMC, and between 35.4 C and 36 C in the Mekong Delta.
The region will continue to experience intense heat on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to the forecasting center. Peak daily temperatures are expected to persist between 35 and 37 C, climbing over 37 C in several localized areas.
Meteorologists noted that forecast temperatures in official advisories may differ from actual outdoor temperatures by 2 to 4 C, or potentially more. This discrepancy depends heavily on surface conditions, such as the presence of concrete and asphalt.
Authorities warned that the combination of intense heat and low humidity could increase the risk of residential fires and explosions due to surging electricity demand. Prolonged exposure to the high temperatures may also cause dehydration and heat-related health emergencies.

The national meteorological agency forecasts that southern Vietnam will continue to experience hot weather until roughly Friday.
From Saturday onward, scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to spread across the region, with the possibility of whirlwinds, lightning, hail, and strong gusty winds.
Since the start of this month, HCMC has experienced scattered thunderstorms in some places and a few heavy rain events, including on May 2 and 5.
The American forecasting site AccuWeather provided a similar outlook, reporting that Ho Chi Minh City should expect frequent afternoon rains starting this Friday. High temperatures are expected to drop to between 32 and 34 C from May 16 to May 20.
