New York: Parents who regularly play children’s songs on Spotify can now stop that music from influencing their personal recommendations and year-end Wrapped results, following a new feature announced by Spotify.
A new way to protect personal music taste
Spotify is rolling out a new setting that allows users to exclude kids and family music from their taste profile. This includes nursery rhymes, songs from animated films, family television themes and other music played primarily for children.
Previously, repeated listening to children’s music could influence recommendations and listening insights, potentially leaving parents with a Wrapped experience that reflected the music they played for their children rather than their own preferences.
With the new setting switched off, users can continue to search for, listen to and create playlists featuring children’s music. However, those streams will no longer shape personalised recommendations such as Discover Weekly, Daily Mix or Wrapped. Spotify says the change also applies retroactively, meaning previously played children’s music can be excluded from relevant listening insights.
The feature is rolling out globally
The one-tap toggle is being introduced globally on mobile for both Free and Premium users. It is enabled by default, but users can switch it off whenever they choose. Spotify says recommendations may take up to 48 hours to reflect the change.
To change the setting, users need to open Settings and privacy, select Content and display, and switch off Include kids and family music in taste profile.
The update accompanies Spotify’s managed accounts for young listeners, which provide children with a separate music experience and parental controls in supported countries.
