Sri Lanka Grave: Questions raised after 250 skeletons were recovered from the mass grave in Chemmani, what is the truth of death?
Sri Lanka Grave Mass Skeletons: Male skeletons are continuously emerging from an alleged mass grave in Chemmani area near Jaffna in Sri Lanka. So far, 249 skeletons have been taken out in the third phase of excavation of this graveyard. A human rights lawyer has given complete information about this in detail to the media and officials.
A Sri Lankan court had last week given a strict order to resume the excavation of this mass grave in Chemmani. Due to severe shortage of funds, the excavation work of this grave was completely stopped about seven months ago. Now after this strict judicial order, the excavation work has again become very fast.
Coins and jewelery were also recovered from the grave
According to human rights lawyer Ranitha Gnanaraja, as of Tuesday, 9 more new skeletons have been recovered in this third phase of excavation. He told that during the excavation, some old coins and a piece resembling jewelery were also found from the ground. Before this, the second phase of excavation also went on for a long time in which a large number of human skeletons were recovered. This important excavation of the second phase continued for 45 days, in which a total of 240 skeletons were taken out from under the ground.
The matter is related to LTTE conflict
This entire graveyard first came into limelight during the struggle of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam i.e. LTTE in the 1990s. A large number of people were buried here during the heavy conflict between the LTTE and government forces at that time. This burial ground was discovered when some human skeletons were suddenly found during general development work in Chemmani on 13 February 2025. Just a week after the skeletons were found, the court had given a strict order for a judicial trial into the entire matter.

Following the court order, the first phase of excavation of this grave formally began on May 15 under full judicial supervision. Let us tell you that even before this in the year 1998, about 15 male skeletons were recovered at the same place which were in discussion.
