A total of six L70 air-defense guns with the Sri Lankan Air Force will be upgraded with state-of-the-art technologies under the financial assistance and technical cooperation of the Government of India. Academic and Youth Exchange Agreement between National Defense College and National Cadet Corps Apart from modernization of military hardware and equipment, the two countries have also signed two landmark agreements towards strengthening mutual cultural and professional ties. Under this, a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed to promote high level academic cooperation between the prestigious 'National Defense College' (NDC) of India and Sri Lanka. Along with this, a comprehensive 'Youth Exchange Programme' has been formalized between the 'National Cadet Corps' (NCC) of the two countries. Through this program, the young cadets of both the countries will get a great opportunity to know and understand each other's military culture, training methods and social values closely, which will further strengthen the mutual emotional bond between the citizens of the two countries in future. Background of China's growing influence and strategic concerns in the Indian Ocean: International affairs experts believe that India has received this security assurance from the top leadership of Sri Lanka at a time when India has long been extremely cautious and concerned about China's growing influence in the Indian Ocean region and its aggressive debt trap. In the last few years, China has made huge financial investments in strategically important neighboring countries like Sri Lanka under its 'String of Pearls' policy. One of the biggest examples of this was the year 2017 when due to inability to repay huge foreign debt, Sri Lanka had to hand over its very strategic and important 'Hambantota Port' and about 15,000 acres of land around it to China on a 99-year long lease. After this incident, strategic concerns regarding the security of India's southern maritime borders had increased significantly. 'Operation Sagar Bandhu' and inauguration of three Bailey bridges built by the Indian Army During this high-level bilateral meeting, the top leaders of both the countries also set a new example of mutual cooperation in the field of Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR). During the meeting, under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Dissanayake, three modern 'Bailey Bridges' recently constructed in Sri Lanka by the Indian Army were inaugurated through virtual medium. It is noteworthy that some time ago, due to the devastating cyclone 'Ditvah' which hit Sri Lanka, there was huge devastation and life was completely disrupted. In that critical situation, the Government of India immediately launched 'Operation Sagar Bandhu' to help the Sri Lankan citizens by sending a comprehensive rehabilitation package and timely relief material. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake expressed his deep gratitude to the Government of India and the people of the country for the prompt and generous assistance provided by India during this period of crisis.
